Orange Trumpet Vine (Pyrostegia venusta)

Orange Trumpet Vine, Pyrostegia venusta

Orange Trumpet Vine (Pyrostegia venusta), also known as Flame Vine, Golden Shower, or Firecracker Vine, originally came from Brazil. This rampant grower clings by tendrils, making it a very powerful climber. It's best to prune it back hard each year after the blooming period to keep it under control. Left untouched, it can easily grow to 100 feet in zones 9-11, covering everything in its path. The bright orange tubular blooms are 3-4 inches long in abundant clusters from January to May. This is a great showy vine for thorough covering of fences to create a living wall of brilliant color. It prefers full sun, is not salt tolerant, and requires none to little fertilizer. Propagation is by cuttings or layering.
